Whether you’re after a gentle stroll or an invigorating hike, the Rakaia Walkway offers several unique features of geological and historic interest, with walks of a range of lengths.

The route passes through forests and shrubs, to an historic ferryman’s cottage site, home guard fortification site and old coal mines, complete with visible shafts. There are beautiful panoramic views of the gorge and other breath-taking landscapes from vantage points along the tracks.

Walks include:

• Picnic Area – 45mins
• Snowden Coal Mine – 1.5hrs
• Walk to the River – 2hrs
• Lookout Point – 15mins
• Rakaia Walkway & Bridge – 4.5hrs
